Early May report

29/5/2019

Pretty decent week early May, although kinda strange. Results have been varying greatly depending on days, boats and anglers. We've had great and shit days. Also, the jigging still isn't consistent. This year has been really tough for jigging. Quality of the jigging has always been cyclical here so we expect it to be back to normal soon. However, we had a few proper good days on jig this week, which is encouraging. It was nice to get double and/or triple hookup of different species on every drift again, we had almost forget what it feels like... Was also good to see a couple of trophy amberjacks in the boat, cause this year and last has been relatively poor for those.

There was a lot of opportunity for big cubera snappers this week and several were boated, but with about 18 being lost, the results are not quite what they could have been. Not blaming on the anglers, though, the boated/lost ratio is pretty average. One needs to remember these are the toughest of any fish to land and come prepared for some serious arm wrestling ! I was lucky to get a real trophy one on my afternoon out with Joe during his day off.

On the strange side as well, there are still no small or big yellowfin tunas around. There should be plenty around by now so we expect them to show anytime.

We're definitely into wet season fishing conditions now. The sardine activity at the coast is gone, the fishing is moving farther offshore and we use the lighter gear less as the focus switches to casting bigger lures on the deeper marks hoping for some trophy fish.

A nice week of fishing in April

12/5/2019

Pretty good fishing this week on the Tuna Coast of Panama. We are starting to see typical wet season conditions with a good mix of variety and some nice trophy fish mixed in. We saw much more cubera snapper than roosterfish this week, and also some trophy sized mullet snappers. The dorados were still around in good numbers and size, and there was some particularly fat jack crevalle, and many of them ! Overall, action on popper was pretty steady with the odd slow day. It's been a good week. On the bad side, the jigging is still poor and there is a big absentee so far this year: the small yellowfin tunas that are usually all over the inshore spot this time of the year. Only a matter of time before they show up. As always when they are biting good, the cubera snappers did some damage and most won their freedom. Check it out !

First week of April report

Pretty standard week really, a couple of slow days, a couple of trophy fish, and some frantic moments of activity. The wind is still strong and the conditions are still typical of the dry season, but we are starting to see more cuberas and mullet snappers. Check out the awesome variety !

Last week of March report

21/4/2019

Let's be honest, this was not a week to remember. Sure, there was decent variety and quantities of fish, but it was not quite what one could expect fishing out of Pedasi. Not everyone got rooster this week, so our good statistic of 100% of our clients catching a rooster on lure since we opened early february has fallen. This was predictable, though, as we move towards wet season, numbers will start to drop but more and more trophy fish will be caught.
Shoals of Colorado snappers laying on the surface were incredibly thick at times. One boat got about 50 of those in a few hours, all on topwater lures. We also saw 2 proper trophy fish this week: a monster roosterfish that fell for a 12cm rapala, and a very nice cubera snapper that hit the ever-effective Hybrida jerkbait.
It was nice to have Dave again at the lodge and meet his crew of friends. And a pleasure to see Drew and his son Scott again, and meet his brother Mark. Thanks all for the good times and vibes.

Another typical dry season week

15/4/2019

Mid-March, we hosted another group of German, this time all veterans of the Tuna Coast of Panama. The fishing was once again very typical of the dry season: some wind, many medium sized fish to be had on topwater, and roosters for everyone ! Out of the 40ish clients we had since the season opener early February, every single guest that came to Pedasi has had at least 1 roosterfish. And as always at Panafishing Adventure, all fish have been caught on artificial lures. This particular week, the average size of the rooster fish was very decent, as you can see in the pictures below. The jigging continues to be tough due to the very strong winds this year. As April comes the wind should come down, allowing for more variety to be caught on jig. The big fish including the mighty cubera snapper will also start to show up and humble even the most experienced anglers.

On a different note, we have a new Captain on the team. Chino will be missed but let me introduce our new Captain Wiljem who will without a doubt be appreciated by our guests. Here he is with a nice roosterfish:

Roosters for everyone !

6/4/2019

Early March, we had the pleasure to have Robert come back at the lodge with another group of German, this time most of them newcomers to the Tuna Coast of Panama. The action was mostly on popper and at the coast, as the wind was way too strong to do anything else anyway. Fortunately there was lots of jacks and roosters at the Coast. Despite this week being the slowest Robert has experienced over his 7 or 8 times here in the dry season, everybody got some roosters on topwater lures. Wind is really strong this year, last time it was that bad was in 2015 when there was a strong El Nino.

End of February action

15/3/2019

This week we had James, Rob and Kelvin from the Isle of Man returning to the Tuna Coast. Fishing has been consistent throughout their stay and many roosters were caught. Jigging was somewhat difficult but the topwater action made up for it. See below for the highlights of the week. All fish were caught on lures, as always at Panafishing !

The same week, we also had Francois and Pierre from Quebec. Francois and Pierre did not quite experience the variety Pedasi is famous for, but they had a lot of fun using poppers and stickbaits, and i'm sure that they will never forget some of the roosterfish frenzy we ended up in. Oh, and also the sight of that massive cubera snapper trying to quit the lure out of the mouth of a big roosterfish, just a couple meters away from the boat. Thank you guys for the good vibes, was really cool to have you around !

The rooster factory has re-opened it's doors !

Every year like clockwork, February triggers the sardine run on the Tuna Coast of Panama. The nearshore waters around Pedasi become infested with sardine balls and all the predators follow in their wake. It is topwater season and among the species that join the fest, roosterfish is the most sought-after. They don't disapoint this year as rooster fish frenzies are found almost every day. Out of 14 anglers we've had so far this season, every single one of them has been able to get at least one rooster on lure. For many of them the scores are reaching double-digits figures. As always this time of the year, huge shoals of Pacific Jack Crevalle are also found nearshore, and those guys don't really think twice when they hear the splash of a popper. One can get so many that it almost becomes a trash fish as the week unfold. But don't get me wrong, those fish strike and fight hard, so they are always good and reliable fun. Among the other species we find with the sardines are sierra mackerel, colorado snappers, yellowfin tuna and dorados, and a few african pompanos which is always a nice catch on a stickbait or popper. The jigging has been really up and down, with fish sometimes having their mouth closed for days in a row. but when they did bite, it was nice to realize that the amberjacks made their big comeback after a remarkable absence last season. Guests have all been very happy with action so far, but if I had to find a negative it would be that the fishing was lacking the variety the place is famous for. Vast areas of our fishing grounds have remained unproductive so far, when they will start yielding again I'll be able to post the colorfoul reports that have been a staple here.
Still waiting on some pictures, but here is a little teaser for the great reports to come:

More November reports

7/1/2019

November was nice and calm weather-wise this year, a welcome change after last year's very unusual tropical storms that affected Panama. Fishing-wise, it's been pretty regular with the usual variety one would expect at that time of the year. There was good numbers of dorado on the inshore spots, and while this is not really a fish we specifically target, many have been opportunistically caught throughout the month. It's also nice to see amberjacks return after a remarkable absence last year. Big fish wise, well, way too many won their fight again this month...
First was James from Guadeloupe. James fished solo and had good action every day but one. Desperate for roosterfish after only witnessing one follower during his first 5 days, I was telling him that roosterfish are elusive, and that sometimes we don't see them for a week, only to find them at every spot the day after (which always leaves us wondering what they do/become during their "absence"...). Surely enough, James got 21 roosters on his last day of fishing so for once, someone actually believed my speech :)

We also hosted Nick and Rob from England. Fishing was below average but they had a few good shots at trophy fish, with some lack of luck and success unfortunately. "Unfinished business" that will require a second visit as Rob said.

Finally we had this nice group from Switzerland, most of them newbies in saltwater fishing. They had decent action and variety, the only thing missing was real trophy fish really, with only a few shots at them and very little success throughout their stay.

Early November report

13/12/2018

Pretty classic month of November with some really good variety to be had in calm seas and fair weather. Here are the pictures taken by Johan Mikkelsen during his visit on the first week of November. I was very pleased that Jimmy managed to land a goliath grouper on a slow jig. We don't hook many of these beasts since throughout their range, they are very hard to catch on artificials. Maybe only 2 to 4 a year, and usually 100% of them are lost. This one happened to be of a manageable size, but still gave a hell of a fight !
