Cubera Locura !

Insane action on the cuberas this week in Pedasi, Panama ! We think they invaded our spots to spawn, because their arrival coincides with the arrival of good numbers of whale sharks, which are know to feed on the spawn of cubera snappers.

This week anglers got lucky, with numerous big specimens. It is worth reminding here that cubera snapper is a well deserved fish, and even more when it is caught on popper or stickbait. Strikes are not so common and even when they are hooked, the odds of bringing it boatside are not so good. There is only one way to fight a cubera: closed drag, and full pressure since the first seconds. If the fish takes the advantage, it will reach the rocks and break the line. For these reasons and because they are mean, any sizeable cubera is a real trophy that any angler can and should be proud of.

Last week, our anglers got lucky and came back home with a lot of reasons to be proud :

Besides this cubera bonanza, quite a few other species were caught. The roosters were here but very lure-shy and it's been 2 weeks since we have not caught a big amberjack. This is Panama ! The fishing here is ever-changing, for the good... and the good.

Colour of the week: red !

Last week, snappers were on fire in Pedasi. The silk snappers, our version of the Atlantic red snapper, were caught one after another if you were on the right spot at the right tide. The cuberas were also plentiful and hungry. Each angler in the party boated at least one Cubera, and all of those were caught on popper or stickbait. Fisherman of the week Bart got 5. Almost everyone got their chance at a monster fish (60+) but none got lucky with those. Catching a really big one on spinning gear really is the ultimate challenge. The big absentee of the week was the roosterfish, with only 2 followers (some real nice ones, though) but no takers. As always at this season, there were lots of frenzies along the beaches with countless jack crevalle mixed with some Sierra macks. The jigging was good with plenty of amberjacks, although no big ones were caught.

We can feel that the green season is approaching. We should soon see the first yellowfin tunas moving close to shore.
