Most Interesting Species and Best Time to Visit
Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Yellowfin Tuna, and Amberjack are the emblematic species of Panama and among the most sought-after targets for popping and jigging enthusiasts. That said, the waters of the Tuna Coast offer remarkable diversity, with more than 35 different species regularly caught on artificial lures. It is not uncommon to experience days with 12 or more species caught and released, highlighting the incredible variety this fishery has to offer.
One of the most common questions we receive is what is the best time of year to visit Panama for a fishing trip. The honest answer is that there is no single best month. Fishing along the Tuna Coast is productive year-round, and the coastal species we primarily target are present in all seasons. As shown in our fishing reports, there is no true low season. Success tends to vary more from day to day or week to week than from one month or season to another.
That said, conditions, species behavior, and availability do change throughout the year, which means each season can offer a different experience. We often encourage returning guests to visit during another time of year to experience the full range of what the Tuna Coast can offer.
The information above should be viewed as a general guideline only. Fishing remains unpredictable, and at any time of year, just about anything can happen.

SnappersCubera and mullet snappers are the ultimate targets for any angler. Known for their raw power and tendency to dive straight for the bottom, cubera snapper in particular is considered the pinnacle challenge on spinning gear — any fish over 30 lbs is a true trophy. The Tuna Coast boasts some of the largest average cubera anywhere in the world. Beyond these giants, our waters are also home to a variety of other thrilling snapper species, including silk, barred, yellow, dotted, and colorado, offering endless action for anglers of all skill levels. |

RoosterfishRoosterfish are the iconic gamefish of Central America, and for good reason. Large, powerful, and incredibly challenging to fool, they deliver fast, long, and unpredictable runs that test every ounce of an angler’s skill — reminiscent of the fight of a permit. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of seeing a roosterfish’s distinctive comb rise behind your popper. While landing a trophy on artificial tackle is a true challenge, there’s no better place in the world to go after one than the waters off the Azuero Peninsula. |

AmberjackNicknamed the “reef donkeys” for good reason, amberjacks are powerful fighters and explosive strikers that will put your jigging tackle — and your arms — to the test. Panama is home to three species of amberjack, but the fat, rounded almaco jack is the true giant, reaching world-record sizes. Many have been landed over 100 lbs, with even more escaping to fight another day, making every encounter an adrenaline-packed challenge. |

JacksPedasi is teeming with five thrilling jack species: jack crevalle, bigeye, bluefin trevally, thread, and African pompano. These fish travel in massive, aggressive shoals, making them incredibly fun to target — especially on light popping gear. When the schools are firing, double and triple hookups are common on every drift, creating chaotic, adrenaline-packed action. And if you prefer, you can simply watch the spectacle unfold — it’s one of the most exhilarating sights on the water. |

GroupersGroupers of all sizes patrol shallow waters starting at just 40 ft. Goliath and broomtail grouper grow into true giants, offering powerful, stubborn fights that challenge even the most experienced anglers. Jigging metal or soft plastics is the perfect way to tempt these fat, grumpy fish, making every hook-up a thrilling test of strength and skill on the Azuero Peninsula. |

Yellowfin TunaSchool-size yellowfin tuna are available year-round, sometimes just 10 minutes from the anchorage. They are aggressive, fast, and not too picky, offering explosive topwater strikes and consistent action. The larger specimens are in a league of their own — relentless, powerful, and testing every ounce of stamina on a spinning outfit. Few fish in the world match tuna for sheer speed, strength, and endurance. |

DoradosWhile often an opportunistic catch, dorados are reliably hooked from May through December. They roam offshore but also visit inshore waters, sometimes in as little as 30 ft. Known more for spectacular aerial displays than raw power, dorados are dazzling fighters, launching high jumps and chasing your lure with bright, explosive energy. Target them around floating logs or debris for extra action, and light tackle adds to the thrill. Watching these stunning, colorful fish light up the water is an unforgettable sight. |

SharksThough not typically targeted, sharks occasionally strike a popper or jig, delivering some of the most powerful fights on the water. Watching a 6-ft blacktip launch completely out of the water with your lure is an adrenaline rush you won’t forget. In addition to blacktips, anglers here encounter hammerhead and bull sharks, making every shark encounter an unforgettable test of skill and nerve. |
